Legacy Elementary Celebrates Family STEAM Night

Legacy Elementary recently welcomed about 100 families to its annual Family STEAM Night, designed to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

“STEAM Night promotes parent and family engagement by connecting the Legacy community with the Lubbock community, where everyone strives to make education meaningful for our students,” said Erica Palm, Title I Math Intervention and event coordinator.

The evening offered a variety of hands-on experiences. Frenship High School robotics teams demonstrated programming skills, and Memorial High School FFA taught families about soil layers, letting participants create their own edible soil.

Another highlight of the evening was a project with Alcove Trails Middle School art students. Legacy students created robot drawings, and middle school students transformed them into physical sculptures using cardboard and pastels.

“The inspiration for this art project comes from real-world industry practices, where concept sketches are used in fields like automotive design and robotics to transform ideas into tangible creations,” said Alcove Trails Middle School art teacher Alejandro Jasso.  “I wanted to introduce that same process to students, knowing that children possess incredible imaginative power and deserve the opportunity to see their ideas brought to life.”

Working within specific height requirements presented challenges, but students pushed their creativity and problem-solving skills.

“The finished sculptures were imaginative, vibrant, and a true reflection of the students’ creativity and perseverance,” said Jasso. “As long as we keep art thriving in our schools, creativity will continue to grow and inspire the next generation.”

Hands-on learning also extended to drones, small helicopters, playground design, sound wave demonstrations, math games, and a scavenger hunt. Second-grade students displayed a veggie cart alongside student Science Fair projects. Families also enjoyed photo opportunities with Texas Roadhouse staff and mascot, and Buddy from HEB.

Participating businesses such as Bahama Bucks, Main Event, Dario’s Pizza & Calzones, Cane’s, Copper Caboose, and Jerzey Mike’s Subs generously donated prizes for students, making the evening even more exciting.

Legacy Elementary Principal Kimberly Moore loved seeing families engaged in learning together.

“My favorite part of STEAM Night was seeing families learning and exploring together. It was so much fun watching students get excited while participating in activities such as making edible dirt with students from Memorial High School's FFA, and then flying drones with Texas Tech's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Program. The robotics stations were a huge hit, and you could tell everyone loved seeing what the middle school and high school students could do,” said Moore.

Moore added that events like STEAM Night strengthen both the campus and the broader community.

“Events like this bring together our school families, Frenship, and Lubbock community members. They help students, families, and staff see all the amazing opportunities and support we have right here in our own backyard. Nights like this make everyone feel proud to be part of our school community,” said Moore.

The success of Family STEAM Night was made possible by dedicated staff members who planned and executed the event with energy and heart.

“The success of this event is all thanks to several of our incredible staff members, led by Erica Palm, who generously volunteered their time to plan, organize, and run the event. They didn’t just put it together — they showed up and made it happen. The love they have for our students and our school was clear in the time, energy, and heart they poured into making the night such a success. I could not be more grateful for them," said Moore.
