With guidance from their dedicated teachers and mentors from the school library, Frenship Middle School Life Skills students stepped into the world of craftwork, learning every detail required to build these iconic homecoming decorations. It wasn’t just about creating mums, though—it was a hands-on learning experience that extended beyond the classroom, sparking excitement and fostering new skills.
Throughout the project, students took charge of their own creations from start to finish. From selecting ribbons and trinkets to piecing together each component, they learned how to plan, organize, and put their unique touches on each mum. With every ribbon twist and charm placement, students honed their attention to detail and patience, key skills they can carry with them into future projects.
"The excitement was contagious from day one," shares Peighton Watts, one of the Life Skills teachers who coordinated the project. "Our students couldn't wait to get started, and that enthusiasm carried through the entire process."
This fun and confidence-boosting activity provided the students with an opportunity to express their personalities and artistic flair. Each student’s mum was a unique expression of their hard work and creativity—a keepsake they could proudly wear, showcasing not only their individuality but also the strong sense of accomplishment they felt in bringing their visions to life.
"Watching the students' faces light up as their mums came together was absolutely priceless," notes Abilgail Hudson, Life Skills teacher. "They weren't just creating decorations; they were building confidence and independence with every ribbon they attached."
This project perfectly captures what we value in our Frenship community. The “Frenship Way” is about supporting students in developing skills that last a lifetime, inspiring pride, and nurturing individual growth in an inclusive environment.
The Life Skills team’s successful project is a testament of the power of hands-on learning. By engaging students in a task that combined creativity, patience, and attention to detail, this project was more than a craft; it was a confidence-building experience that celebrated every student’s ability and spirit. For students, teachers, and mentors alike, the mums became symbols of pride, perseverance, and the Frenship values they’ll carry with them.
