Middle School Headed to State in National History Day Competition

Each year more than half a million students across the country participate in the National History Day Contest (NHD). Students choose a historical topic related to the annual theme and then conduct primary and secondary research.

The Virtual Regional Competition judged by members of the Texas State Historical Society on February 15 and the results are listed below:

In the category of Individual Exhibit, Althea Doctolero from Terra Vista Middle School earned first place,  automatically landing her a spot at the state competition.

In the category of Group Exhibit, Bradley Merritt, Tristan Duran, and Owen Demaray from Heritage Middle School came in second place and will automatically advance to the state competition.

From Frenship Middle School, Rylee Mize, Grace Speed, and Mackenzie West won third place and will be the alternate to state.

Frenship Social Studies Coordinator, Regan Lamberson, said she wasn't sure what to expect since this was the first year middle school students at Frenship participated in this competition.

"To say I’m impressed with the performance of these students is an understatement," Lamberson said. "They have represented us so well! Their work is not over yet. The advancing students will have to rework their projects, take the feedback from the judges at the regional competition, and revise, revise, revise."

Lamberson said the state-level competition virtual submissions are due at the end of March. Results will be available in early April.
